TW- 120883 Tainan Chikanlou

Chikan Towers (赤崁樓 Chìkàn Lóu), originally called Fort Provintia, was built in 1652 by the Dutch. In front of Chikanlou there are nine sets of stone turtles carrying plates.

The nine stelae that stand right by Chihkan Tower were placed here during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1735 – 1796) to mark the quashing of a riot. These stelae stand on the back of bixi, a Chinese mythological animal that resembles a turtle. The bixi was once regarded as the ninth son of a dragon. On the stelae are carved poems by Emperor Qianlong.
