The nine stelae that stand right by Chihkan Tower were placed here during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1735 – 1796) to mark the quashing of a riot. These stelae stand on the back of bixi, a Chinese mythological animal that resembles a turtle. The bixi was once regarded as the ninth son of a dragon. On the stelae are carved poems by Emperor Qianlong.
